If you run a small business in London, you’ve probably typed your service plus “London” into Google and found page after page of national brands, comparison sites and directories. It can feel impossible to compete. The good news? Most of your customers aren’t searching that way — and the businesses that understand this are quietly winning work borough by borough.
Why “London” is the wrong keyword for most small businesses
London is home to around nine million people across 32 boroughs plus the City of London. A search term as broad as “electrician London” or “carpet cleaning London” attracts the biggest marketing budgets in the country. National chains, lead-generation platforms and directories pour money into those terms.
But think about how people actually search. Someone with a blocked drain in Bromley doesn’t need a plumber who covers “London” — they need one who’ll get to Bromley today. So they search “plumber Bromley”, “emergency plumber Beckenham” or simply “plumber near me” (and Google uses their location to decide what to show).
Those local searches are far less competitive and far more likely to turn into a booking. That’s where a small business can genuinely win.
Step 1: Decide which boroughs you really want work from
Before touching your website, be honest about your patch. Most London trades and service businesses have a natural area — often a cluster of neighbouring boroughs along the routes they travel. Ask yourself:
- Where do my best (most profitable) jobs come from?
- Where can I realistically reach quickly?
- Which areas do I want more of — perhaps higher-value postcodes?
Write the list down. These areas become the backbone of your local SEO plan.
Step 2: Build a landing page for each area — and make each one unique
A dedicated page for each borough or neighbourhood gives Google a clear signal that you serve that area, and gives the person searching a page that speaks directly to them. But there’s a catch: copy-and-paste pages with only the town name swapped are a well-known shortcut, and they rarely perform well. Google is good at recognising thin, duplicated content.
A strong borough page should include:
- An area-specific introduction — mention the neighbourhoods, property types or local issues you deal with there.
- Your services, linked to your main service pages.
- Proof — reviews from customers in that area, photos of local jobs, accreditations.
- A map showing the area you cover.
- Local FAQs, such as parking, access or response times in that area.
- A clear call to action — click-to-call and a quote form.
This is exactly the approach we used when building 16 unique town pages for VDL Vehicle Solutions, each with its own map, FAQs and photos.
Step 3: Connect it all with smart internal linking
Your area pages shouldn’t float on their own. Link them from an “Areas We Cover” hub, link neighbouring boroughs to each other, and link from each area page to the relevant service pages. This helps Google crawl your site and understand how everything fits together — and it helps visitors find what they need.
Step 4: Get your Google Business Profile working alongside your website
For “near me” style searches, the map results (the local pack) are often what people see first. Your Google Business Profile should have the right categories, a clear service area, real photos, regular updates and a steady flow of reviews — and it should link to your website. Your website then backs up the profile with depth and detail that a profile can’t hold.
Step 5: Publish content London customers actually want
Blog posts that answer real questions help you appear for longer, more specific searches. A London cleaning company might write about end-of-tenancy cleaning requirements for renters; a roofer might explain what to expect from a loft conversion survey in Victorian terraces. Each article links back to your service and area pages, lifting the whole site.
How long does borough-level SEO take?
Google itself says it typically takes four months to a year from making changes to seeing the benefits. Hyper-local pages often start picking up impressions sooner because competition is lower, but the real payoff comes from consistency — adding pages, content and improvements month after month.
| Approach | Competition | Buyer intent |
|---|---|---|
| “[service] London” | Very high | Mixed |
| “[service] [borough]” | Moderate | High |
| “[service] [neighbourhood]” | Lower | Very high |
